All Lobbyists Do Not Smoke Cigars

When you and I think of lobbyists (people who try to persuade elected officials to vote a certain way), we often conjure up pictures of sleazy men smoking cigars in dimly lit rooms and attempting to cut "deals."

Well, that is not necessarily the case. We salute Dawn Higgins-Detelich, a lobbyist for the Ohio Academy of Trial Lawyers. Dawn was extremely instrumental in lobbying members of the Ohio Legislature to convince them to protect the rights of Ohio Dalkon Shield victims by passing special legislation in Ohio. She met with individual members of the Ohio House of Representatives and the Ohio Senate, and spoke to full committees. She also met with members of Governor Voinovich's staff. At meetings held with our law firm and members of the legislature, Dawn was present.

And all meetings were held in the State Office Tower in Columbus, where there is a no-smoking policy throughout the building -- which pleased Dawn, who doesn't smoke.
So, the next time you think of a lobbyist, and the thought of a cigar crosses your mind, forget it. Not all lobbyists smoke cigars.
