The Women's Alliance for Recovery Services holds an annual cooking contest, called "Real Men Cook", to raise money to help women and their children battle alcohol and chemical dependency. Jim Szaller will enter the contest, and prepare the following recipe to serve at the event on Friday, April 22, 1994 at the Cleveland Convention Center (11:30 am to 2:00 pm).

"SIMPLY THE WORLDS' BEST BAKED BEANS"

1 lb bacon
1 lg clove garlic (chopped
1 lg red pepper, chopped into small pieces
2 lg white onions, chopped into medium pieces
1 can (53 oz) pork & beans
1 can (20 oz) pineapple chunks in natural juice
1 cup ketchup
1 Tbls honey
3/4 cup brown sugar
1 tsp finely ground pepper
1/2 tsp coarse ground black pepper
1 tsp Tabasco sauce
2 Tbls butter
2 tsp hickory smoke flavor

Cut bacon into 1" pieces and cook until done, but not crispy.
Drain and set aside.
Melt butter in skillet, and cook garlic, onions and red peppers until limp.
Combine all ingredients in large pot and simmer, covered. for 30 minutes.
